Best Things to Do Near Panama City Beach (Besides the Beach)

Sunlit palm-lined promenade at Pier Park, Panama City Beach

Two minutes from the pool is one thing. What guests actually ask us about is what’s beyond it — because a week in Panama City Beach is long enough to want a change of scenery at least once or twice.

Start with St. Andrews State Park, about ten minutes from the house. It has two different beaches: a calm shoreline for the kids and a jetty side where the water turns clear and turquoise and you can spot fish without a boat. Bring water shoes for the rocks and get there before mid-morning in summer if you want easy parking.

If the group wants a boat instead of a beach chair, Shell Island is the move. It’s the undeveloped barrier island most people see from the shore and never actually reach. A short shuttle out of the Grand Lagoon gets you there, wild dolphins show up more often than not, and there’s time to walk the sand and look for real shells before heading back.

For an evening that doesn’t involve sand in anyone’s shoes, Pier Park is the easy answer — open-air shops, a movie theater, a Ferris wheel worth riding once for the view, and enough restaurants that nobody has to agree on one cuisine. It’s a ten minute drive up Thomas Drive, and it’s best after 5pm when the heat breaks and the string lights come on.

Rain in the forecast doesn’t have to mean a wasted afternoon. Panama City Beach has a handful of fully indoor, air-conditioned options built for exactly that day — arcades, laser tag, science exhibits — a couple hours there and everyone forgets it’s raining outside.

None of this requires much planning. Most of it is a ten to fifteen minute drive from the house, close enough to do on a whim and far enough to feel like you left. We keep a running list of what’s actually worth it, not just what’s advertised, for guests once they book, so you’re not guessing when you get here.

If you haven’t picked your week yet, check availability for Seashell Palace and Seashell Palace 2 — both sit a three minute walk from the beach, which makes it easy to bounce between the sand and everything else on this list without losing half the day to driving.
